I finally did it. I jumped.
At my school you have the Higher Elements. It's sorta like Adventure Bound if you go to Jackson.
We have 3 story high rock climbing walls that are all different shapes, we have the 3 story high swings that you can walk across, you have the 3 story high rope and log that you can walk across, and you have the "Leap of Faith" that you can well...leap off of.
The Leap of Faith is about a little higher than the average telephone pole, but wider so that you can stand on it. First you have a harness and your valley team. After you are harnessed in nice and tight and your valley team is ready, you climb a ladder to get to the metal ring things that you use to climb up which is only about 8 feet up. Then you get to the top and grab a rope that is about 1 foot away, so you really gotta stretch to reach it. Then you use that to help you get up, then once you are standing you have a choice.
A) you just jump off.
b) you can attempt to jump off and reach the trapease like handle thats 7 feet away. In order to do that, someone on the ground has to rock the pole back and forth and then you jump.
And just to let you know, when your standing on top, it shakes enough! Especially if your legs are shaking.
Today I had my Gym finals, which means I had 2 hours of gym. 1 1/2 hours of climbing, and 1/2 an hour of either volleyball, 4 squares, basketball, or the weight room.
So my friend Eden goes to climb right, and when she gets down she looks fine and only her leg is shaking. She said it was really scary, but very fun.
Melissa said that eden had to be crazy to do something like that. I dont know what came over me, but I felt like I HAD to do it. I was actually excited about going up there to climb. That was...untill I actually was up there.
I put on my helmet and my teacher helps put on the harness [we needed two for this one.] and I have my valley team ready to go. I'm climbing up the ladder and I almost slip, no big deal I thought. While I was climbing I could only see what was right in front of my face. I couldn't even look down even if I wanted to. So I'm climbing and the higher I get, the more the pole shakes. By the time I got to the top and had to stand up, I was already breathing heavily and didn't want to do it anymore. I'm trying so hard to get the rope that I needed to help stand up, and I grab my rope for support and lean foward, and as I do the pole leans foward too. I had to calm myself by thinking 'Its ok, it only leans foward a certain amount and then stops....' I stretch and grab the rope. Now I'm standing and breathing even faster. I felt like my heart was going to explode.
"Arm" [thats what everyone calls him] was on the ground and calls out "do you want me to rock it?" and I said "Hell no!"
So I'm standing there holding onto the rope I'm held up by on my harness and Mr. Convey [the gym teacher watching us] started the countdown for when I would jump. As soon as he said 3 I jumped because I didn't want to be up there on that shaking pole anymore. I was lowered to the ground and took off the top harness and my helmet and the ropes were taken off. I was shaking so bad and it hurt to inhale deeply.
Eden comes over and asks me if I was okay. I said I was. She asked if I had fun.
HA!
But it was a little fun. I was so fucking scared, but it was a little fun. I wouldn't do it again though. It gave me such a fucking headache too. It's unbelievable.
It was awesome though and thats why I feel accomplished.
